Fracture and Fatigue of Travelling Plates

In this chapter, problems of fracture and stability of a moving plate, travelling in a system of rollers at a constant velocity, are studied. It is known that in the manufacturing process, there may occur many kinds of defects in the paper web, such as edge cracks and blister and fiber cuts. Our aim is to tackle this problem and analyse theoretically how the defects change the behaviour. We will use the model of a thin elastic plate made of brittle material. A plate with initial cracks is studied, subjected to constant tension and cyclic tension. In this chapter, the problems of safety analysis and optimization of a moving elastic plate travelling between two rollers at a constant axial velocity are considered. We will use a model of a thin elastic plate subjected to bending and in-plane tension (distributed membrane forces). We will study transverse buckling (divergence) of the plate and its brittle and fatigue fracture caused by fatigue crack growth under cyclic in-plane tension (loading). Fatigue Crack Growth for Different Ratios of Bending to Torsion in AlCu4Mg1

The paper contains the fatigue crack growth test results obtained under proportional bending with torsion in AlCu4Mg1 aluminium alloy [1]. Specimens with rectangular cross sections and dimensions: length l = 90 mm, height w = 10 mm and thickness g = 8 mm were tested [2]. Each specimen had an external unilateral notch with depth 2 mm and radius ρ = 0.2 mm. The tests were performed under the stress ratio R = −1. The notches in the specimens were cut with a milling cutter and their surfaces were polished after grinding. Fatigue crack growth through particulate clusters in polycarbonate material

The interaction of a crack with a perfectly bonded inclusion or a cluster of inclusions in polycarbonate matrix was investigated through both numerical simulations and fatigue tests. Stress intensity factors (K(I)) were evaluated by boundary element method for several particle sizes, position and finally for inclusion cluster as a precursor study for the experiments. The numerical simulation has shown the crack tendency to circumvent the inclusions with consequential reduction of the growth rate. Fatigue crack growth behaviour of four structural steels in air and in a geothermal fluid environment

Abstract In recent years the exploitation of geothermal energy has expanded rapidly in Italy. This has created a requirement for improved drilling technology, to reduce the number of failures occuring in the drills, which is more frequent than in oil wells. This paper deals with the results obtained in FCCR tests of four materials both in air and in two types of aggressive environments. Deterioration takes place by fatigue, corrosion fatigue and hydrogen embrittlement. It is concluded that the steel G105 is a suitable substitute for S135 in drill pipes, and inspections between drillings may be adequate to prevent failure for small-curvature wells.
A novel frequency domain method for predicting fatigue crack growth under wide band random loading

This work deals with the evaluation of the fatigue crack growth rate of structural components subjected to uniaxial Gaussian stationary wide band random loading. In detail, a new frequency domain method that allows the user to estimate the expected crack growth rate directly from the PSD data is proposed. Certain fatigued structures must be inspected in order to detect fatigue damages that would otherwise not be apparent. A technique for obtaining optimal inspection strategies is proposed for situations where it is difficult to quantify the costs associated with inspections and undetected failure. For fatigued structures for which fatigue damages are only detected at the time of inspection, it is important to be able to determine the optimal times of inspection. Fewer inspections will lead to lower fatigue reliability of the structure upon demand, and frequent inspection will lead to higher cost. Abstract The elastic-plastic J-integral is adopted to correlate fatigue crack growth data of ductile metals. An analytical link is known to exist between the J-integral and the strain energy density averaged in a control volume embracing the crack tip.
